Our facility uses internal floating roof and dome tanks for storing hazardous chemicals. There are issues with the flame arrestor breather vents on the tank tops, which need to be replaced. However, the tanks currently contain substances such as toluene, xylene, propylene, and ethylene glycol. What do you think are the safe ways to carry out this work? What safety measures should be taken before proceeding? Thank you
In my humble opinion: First, fill the tank with nitrogen before conducting gas analysis. It is not permissible to work at heights in areas where conditions are poor; scaffolding must be used, a high-altitude work permit is required, safety belts must be worn, and explosion-proof tools should be utilized. Care must be taken during disassembly to avoid generating sparks. Workers should position themselves upwind, keeping their mouths and noses away from the manholes, or wear long-tube gas masks
I’m not sure if the work required by the poster involves using fire; if not, it seems that the first step should be to fill the tank with an adequate amount of nitrogen, then install a blind flange on the top of the tank, and finally use explosion-proof tools for the work – this will ensure safety during the operation.
