The oxygen cathode technology, developed jointly by Woody Company and Bayer Corporation, has been successfully industrialized for the electrolysis of hydrochloric acid. Two ion-exchange membrane electrolyzers capable of producing 10,000 tons of chlorine per year were put into operation at Bayer’s plant in Brunsbuettel in October 2003 and May 2004, respectively. Each electrolyzer consists of 76 cells, uses second-generation ODC (RhSy) electrodes, with a effective cell area of 2.5 m2. The operating current density is 5 kA/m2, and the direct current power consumption is 1,100 kW·h per tCl2 – this represents a reduction of 700 kW·h compared to conventional diaphragm-based hydrochloric acid electrolyzers. The expected lifespan of the membrane and gas diffusion electrodes is 4 years. Bayer expects that the oxygen cathode technology for producing caustic soda and chlorine through the electrolysis of NaCl solutions to be developed by 2010.
