I work in the field of instruments; I have just switched from the petrochemical industry to the chlor-alkali industry. I would like to know what kinds of instruments are used in the chlor-alkali industry that are not found in the petrochemical industry, how they differ from those used in petrochemical applications, and what precautions should be taken.

The temperature and pressure in chlor-alkali industries are not high, but there are many corrosive and toxic substances such as hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite, chlorine gas, etc. Dry chlorine and wet chlorine have vastly different corrosivities. Therefore, pipes and instrumentation use many special materials such as titanium, nickel, fiberglass-reinforced plastic, PVC, PVDF, F46, etc. The materials of many thermometer casings are special. Some use composite materials, or metal chambers lined with plastic. Both butterfly valves and straight-stroke valves come in lined versions. Electromagnetic flowmeters are widely used for acids, bases, and salts. There is a trace water analyzer at the inlet of the chlorine compressor; generally, the chemical formula phosphorus pentoxide is used.
The pipes are made of pure nickel or pure titanium, and many of the valves are lined with Teflon; the control valves are made of Inconel
