Copper is actually quite reactive and active in both the water-gas shift reaction and the synthesis of methanol from syngas.
Although the alkaline gas passes through a water separator, it still contains a small amount of alkali that enters the compressor. Along with the small amount of carbon dioxide present in the gas, this alkali reacts with the copper in the equipment at certain temperatures and high pressures to form basic copper carbonate, thereby causing chemical corrosion. Not only should instruments not be of the copper-type, but copper materials should also be avoided in components such as compressor cylinder liners.
If MTG is not produced using pure methanol but rather crude methanol, then wouldn’t there be no alkali?
