For the analysis of moisture and mechanical impurities in lubricating oil, is visual inspection sufficient or are other methods required? The person in charge of our company’s chemistry laboratory said that visual inspection is enough – is that acceptable?
Mechanical impurities can be identified by visual inspection, but only for qualitative or semi-quantitative purposes. The method for analyzing mechanical impurities in lubricating oils, as far as I remember, is part of the standard analysis methods; you can inquire with the analysis center at the Beijing Research Institute of Petroleum and Chemical Technology.
