When modeling software, it is necessary to assign node numbers to each unit; this is simple in the case of a single pipeline with few branches. If there are many branches, it can be easy to get confused sometimes. When carrying out actual modeling, what are some good methods for defining nodes so that the node numbers of the pipelines are very organized and easy to understand? Please share your insights.
The definition of node numbers should generally follow a rule recognized by everyone. Or it may be mentioned in the software instructions. It’s okay if you don’t define one yourself. As long as one can understand it oneself and the proofreader can comprehend it, that’s sufficient. Simplicity and clarity are the most important!
When I first started using simulation software, I often encountered this problem as well: the devices and pipes were not separated into distinct nodes; everything was drawn in one continuous line. After performing the calculations, the specialists in charge of pipes and equipment said that certain conditions needed to be changed, and as a result, both the pipes and the equipment had to be modified, which made things extremely chaotic. We are also trying to figure out how to make it more logical; for example, we could set ranges for node supervisors (10–1000), branch pipes (1100–1500), equipment (2000–3000), and so on. As long as it’s not a very large piping system, assigning node numbers within certain ranges will help create order. There is no most reasonable option; only ones that are more reasonable.

The stress analysis conditions submitted by the piping team are presented in the form of a diagram; a numbering scheme is first established on this diagram – specifying the range for the main pipes (for example, 001~), the range for the first branch pipes (for example, 100~), the range for the second branch pipes (for example, 200~), and so on. Of course, if one is willing to spend more time on it, a detailed numbering scheme for the nodes can be created, with intervals between the numbers, such as 005, 010, and so on. . . . . It is also convenient to add nodes in the middle. Can this save a few minutes? This way, the approach to inputting the model becomes clearer. I’ve always believed that one shouldn’t rush into action before starting a task; it’s better to think first and plan things out, as this will make the work easier and more efficient. Grinding the knife doesn’t delay the task of cutting wood.
