I would like to know how much fuel coal and how much gasified coal (Ruhlig furnace) are required to produce one ton of methanol; it would be great if a calculation method could be provided.
You can calculate the coal consumption in reverse. For example, it is necessary to know how much carbon monoxide is required to produce one ton of methanol; this allows for the calculation of the amount of carbon monoxide used. Next, calculate the amount of coal required based on the carbon monoxide content in the gas. It is based on those with low hydrogen or carbon monoxide content.
It’s hard to say, as different companies have varying coal consumption rates and the quality of coal they use also differs. The best coal consumption rate I’ve encountered for ton of ammonia alcohol at the moment is 1.58, while the highest values are approaching 3.0.
Reply to 1# Hong Cai: It depends on the quality of the coal; there are significant differences depending on the coal type. However, it seems that the gas produced by Lurgi furnaces is not very suitable as a feed gas for methanol synthesis.
Original poster, does that include the coal used for power generation? If not, the figure would be around 1.4–1.6. It also depends on the type of coal used. If the energy consumption for power generation is taken into account, an additional 0.6–0.8 should be added. I just conducted a cost calculation earlier
1.4–1.6, with thermal coal at around 2.0; the figures vary from one company to another – these are the consumption figures for the wet process!
