There are many factors that influence the consumption of sulfuric acid in the production of wet-process phosphoric acid, such as the impurity content in the ore and the level of operational control. In domestic production of wet phosphoric acid, the dihydrate method is generally used, and it can be divided into two categories, with slight differences in consumption. The concentrated acid method is usually used in conjunction with monoammonium phosphate or diammonium phosphate, or calcium carbonate; the sulfuric acid consumption in this case is 2.8 tons per ton of P2O5. The dilute acid method is typically used for the production of calcium hydrogen phosphate, and due to the presence of sulfur-based processes, the sulfuric acid consumption is 2.4 tons per ton of P2O5.
A phosphate production plant with an annual output of 300,000 tons is accompanied by a sulfuric acid plant with an output of 800,000 tons; this is what is commonly referred to as the “836” project. Later on, the annual production of ammonium phosphate will be 600,000 tons.

Most of the sulfuric acid produced by our company is manufactured in-house; we are capable of producing it both from pyrite and from sulfur. Different production processes have their own characteristics, so it’s not possible to simply say which one is more complex and which one is simpler.

Yes, some mines consume a high amount of sulfuric acid while others use less. We generally calculate it based on the finished product; for example, one ton of ammonium phosphate (54%) requires 1.34 tons of sulfuric acid (98%).

Phosphoric acid requires lower maintenance costs compared to sulfuric acid; the control standards for phosphoric acid are quite strict, and there is significant leakage. Ammonium phosphate is relatively simpler to handle
