In accordance with Article 3.0.2 of the \"Code for Seismic Design of Building Engineering\" (GB 50223-2008), building projects should be classified into the following four seismic design categories: 1. Special seismic design category: This refers to major building projects that have special facilities in use, those related to **public safety**, and those that could result in severe secondary disasters or other extremely serious consequences, thus requiring special seismic protection measures. Abbreviated as Category A. 2 Key fortification category: Refers to **life-support related buildings whose operational functions cannot be interrupted or must be restored as soon as possible, as well as buildings that could lead to severe disaster consequences such as large numbers of casualties, thus requiring higher fortification standards. Abbreviated as Category B. 3 Standard fortification category: Refers to a large number of buildings that are fortified in accordance with standard requirements, other than those covered in categories 1, 2, and 4. Abbreviated as Category C. 4 Moderately fortified category: Refers to buildings that are used by few people, and where seismic damage will not cause secondary disasters; it is permissible to reduce the requirements to a moderate level under certain conditions. Abbreviated as Class D. 3.0.3 The seismic design requirements for buildings in various seismic design categories shall meet the following criteria: For buildings in the standard seismic design category, their seismic measures and resistance capabilities shall be determined based on the local seismic intensity, so as to achieve the goal of preventing collapse or severe damage that could endanger lives in the event of unexpected seismic events with intensities higher than the local seismic intensity. For Category 2 structures with enhanced seismic protection requirements, their seismic measures should be strengthened to meet standards one degree higher than the local seismic design intensity ; However, when the seismic design intensity is 9 degrees, seismic measures shall be taken that meet requirements higher than those for 9 degrees ; The seismic measures for foundation systems shall comply with relevant regulations. At the same time, its **action** should be determined based on the seismic fortification intensity of the region. For Category 3 structures with special seismic resistance requirements, their seismic protection measures shall be enhanced by one degree above the local seismic design intensity ; However, when the seismic fortification intensity is 9 degrees, seismic measures shall be taken that meet requirements higher than those for 9 degrees. At the same time, its function should be determined based on the results of the approved **safety assessment**, in accordance with requirements that are higher than the local seismic design intensity. 4 Moderate fortification category: It allows the seismic fortification intensity to be reduced appropriately compared to the requirements of the local seismic fortification intensity; however, it should not be reduced when the seismic fortification intensity is set at 6 degrees. It shall not be reduced when the seismic design intensity is 6 degrees. Under normal circumstances, its **effect** should still be determined based on the seismic fortification intensity of the region. Note: For industrial buildings classified as high-seismic-design category but of small scale, it is permitted to design them according to the standard seismic-design category if better seismic-resistant materials are used and the structural system meets the requirements of the seismic design codes. According to this standard for comparison, the seismic resistance category of the building is determined, and then seismic design is carried out.
