Everyone, could you tell me why a little dispersant is added to the mixing tank first when preparing the initiator?
Since the initiators are not water-soluble, a small amount of dispersant must be added to water to disperse them. To facilitate addition to the polymerization reactor, the initiator must be prepared as a dispersion. Pure initiators decompose very rapidly, but once incorporated into a dispersion, they become quite safe, eliminating the possibility of rapid decomposition.
Can I just mix the dispersant with the initiator and add them together?
The initiators EHP and CNP used in suspension polymerization are water-emulsions, not aqueous solutions; therefore, when diluted for preparation, they cannot be dispersed evenly. A dispersant is added to achieve the effect of emulsifying the initiator. However, I am not quite sure about the exact ratio required for combining the initiator and dispersant. Most of the technologies introduced to Japan these days involve adding the initiator solution directly into the reactor along with deionized water, and they can also be used normally.
In essence, it involves dispersing the initiator, as the initiator itself is an oil-soluble liquid; without a dispersant, the initiator particles will clump together
