Is it harmful for the motor of a high-pressure reciprocating pump to run in reverse?
Please tell me what’s going on. I’ve been working in the chemical industry for less than two years, and I’ve really never seen anything like this.
Reversing the motor of a high-pressure reciprocating pump causes no harm
It has basically no effect on the pump; the plunger moves in the same way whether it is rotating in forward or reverse direction. However, it does affect some transmission devices that use threaded connections, so it is recommended not to rotate it in reverse
The analyses from those upstairs make sense. For reciprocating pumps, they can also operate with the motor running in reverse, which is determined by the structural characteristics of such pumps.
Our ammonia pump has been running in reverse for 3 days, but it’s still functioning normally. I’m still a bit worried; it would be better if it could be transferred sooner.
What causes the motor of a reciprocating pump to rotate in the reverse direction? Could it be due to incorrect wiring by an electrician? I’ve never heard of such a thing before. However, reverse rotation should not have any impact on the performance of the pump. But in reciprocating pumps, the motor usually delivers torque through gears; whether those gears can handle that torque is another issue
If there is a shaft end pump at the shaft end, it cannot be reversed; moreover, reversing it will change the force-bearing surfaces of the gears in the gearbox, requiring them to re-engage, which may result in loud noises. In the case of a vertical setup, the guide plates used for aligning the pistons are oriented in the opposite direction. Additionally, if the shaft bearings have not been replaced, reversing operation will accelerate their wear.
