The factory where I worked at the beginning of the year was under construction; they chose PPR pipes for the fire protection water systems. I’m worried that the welding points might not be able to withstand the pressure of fire protection water, so let’s all discuss this issue. I even argued with my boss over this, and then I resigned.
I think steel is a more suitable material for fire hoses, as it can withstand high pressures. Fire water typically requires a pressure of over 10 kilograms, and testing is carried out at a pressure of 16 kilograms. The welding joints of PPR pipes are only heat-fused, so they cannot handle such high pressures
The poster said, “For the newly built factory, they specified that PPR pipes be used for the fire protection water pipes...” I don’t know who made that decision. It should be clear that: 1. The fire protection system must be designed by a design institute, and its drawings must be approved by the fire department; the choice of materials for fire protection pipes cannot be decided arbitrarily by anyone. 2. As far as I know, PPR pipes can be used for the buried sections of fire protection systems; the material chosen must be appropriate, of good quality, and capable of withstanding sufficient pressure. It is not allowed to be used on the ground. Of course, the use of the underground area still requires approval from the fire department. Some places agree to such use. 3. There are specialized construction firms for PPR pipe installation, and the welding process is highly refined, ensuring no quality issues. Using PPR pipes as buried fire protection pipes does have some advantages over carbon steel pipes, such as resistance to corrosion and easier installation. Disadvantage: There must be no leakage of strong solvents underground within the factory area, as PPR pipes have limited resistance to solvents.
