Coke has a wide range of uses; it is employed in various industries such as iron smelting, casting, calcium carbide production, sintering, gas production, and the processing of non-ferrous metals. Different uses require different specifications for coke. 1. Requirements for coke used in iron production: The lump size should be >25 mm; the ash content (A) and sulfur content (S) must not be too high. It should also possess a certain resistance to crushing (M40) as well as wear resistance (M10). 2. Requirements for coke used in calcium carbide production: High fixed carbon content and low ash content are required; high strength is not necessary. The particle size should be between 15 mm and 20 mm. Therefore, it is appropriate to use blended coal containing petroleum-derived delayed coking coke to produce coke for calcium carbide production.

Coke used for calcium carbide production is required to have low ash, low sulfur, and low phosphorus content, as well as a high fixed carbon content; the phosphorus level must be less than 0.02. In fact, these are the same requirements as for ferroalloy coke. Strength is not a requirement, and small lumps with little slag are preferred; good blue coal can also be used, given its lower cost. Produced using high-volatility gas coal as raw material.
