When using P204 to separate cobalt and manganese ions, why are there still manganese ions present in the aqueous phase after one extraction? When using an O/A ratio of 1:1, the entrainment phenomenon is too severe. What causes this? How can it be resolved? Also, when cobalt and manganese are entrained into the organic phase during back-extraction, what acid concentrations should be used for each? so that the two will not mix together
Trying to completely separate cobalt from manganese in just one extraction step seems like an overly simplistic approach. Extraction is not such a simple issue. Severe entrainment can be caused by various factors; the acidity during back-extraction depends on the metal concentration you want in the solution after back-extraction Extraction also has high requirements.

The amount extracted is very small; it’s definitely impossible to extract it all at once.

-- Factors related to entrainment: 1) Issues with equipment design, such as the design of your mixing and clarification tank, the method of stirring, and the intensity of stirring. 2) The phase continuity problem in the mixing chamber. 3) Adjustment of the organic phase height. 4) Viscosity of the organic phase, properties of the organic phase itself, quality. 5) Workers’ operations. 6) Efficiency of the purification process. There are other factors as well, which all need to be observed on-site to make a decision. --

There are many online; you can look for them by yourself. That’s quite a lot
