Have you heard of Shanghai Huaxin Software? What’s it like? Is it believable? They claim to be among the top technical companies in the country. Last Thursday, I asked them for the prices of several software programs and read the information on their website regarding their membership program: “By paying a one-time fee of 3,000 yuan, you can choose any 6 software programs from those available at my company, and you will also become a formally registered Platinum VIP member of Shanghai Huaxin Technology Co., Ltd. (the membership lasts for 5 years...).” I also called their customer service; the sales manager said that including 11% tax, I would get 6 software programs, so I transferred 3,330 yuan and sent a fax to confirm it. Later, I received an email from them stating that the payment had been received and that I had officially become a member. Now I can choose any 6 software packages, and they provided the prices (with the word “member” added before the price; the member rate is the same as the initial quote). The total cost is around 10,000 yuan, including 11% tax. I used to think that by paying 3330 yuan I could get their software right away and become a member, but it seems now that I was just being greedy for a small discount when I chose them. They said that 3330 yuan is only the membership fee; once you become a member, you can choose 6 more programs at the member price. The products will be shipped after payment is received. Of course, it’s also possible not to buy any software – in that case it’s considered as if you’ve given up your right to make such choices as a member, and the membership rights expire if no purchase is made within 7 days. Because I asked other software companies for quotes, and their prices were similar, but there was no need to pay a membership fee. I called them several times, asking either for a refund or to change my premium membership to a gold membership so that I could purchase fewer packages. They refused, citing company policies that cannot be changed under any circumstances. Eventually, their sales manager decided that the premium membership couldn’t be changed, but I had to purchase at least 3 products at their member price; the other 3 products could be purchased later during the five-year membership period. Tomorrow is the end of the 7-day deadline they set, and the total cost for these three software packages is around 5,000. I need to pay them by tomorrow, otherwise my previous membership fees will be invalidated. I checked this afternoon: 1. A search with the Pudong Industrial and Commercial Bureau in Shanghai showed no registration for a company named Shanghai Huaxin Technology Co., Ltd. 2. On Baidu Know, there were posts regarding Shanghai Huaxin Software Technology Co., Ltd., followed by posts stating that there was a mistake (http://zhidao.baidu.com/question/165176298.html). 3.
