It can be used as a raw material for coking and heavy catalysis to lighten residue oil. The main products resulting from coking thermal cracking are: gasoline, diesel, wax oil, coke, and rich gas. As a process for reducing weight, the main advantage of the coking process is that it can process various low-quality residue oils with high carbon residue values and heavy metal contents, and it is a relatively simple process with lower investment and operating costs. Its main disadvantages are high coke yield and poor quality of the liquid products. The coke yield is generally 1.4 to 2 times the carbon residue value of the raw material, resulting in a relatively large amount. But in most cases, coke can only be sold as a regular solid fuel at a very low price. Although the coking process is not yet an ideal method for lightening residue oil, in modern refining industries, it remains a very important approach to increasing the yield of light oils, thanks to the rational allocation of petroleum resources and the optimization of plant design.
