Methanol is a colorless, transparent, flammable, and volatile toxic liquid. At room temperature, it is non-corrosive to metals (with the exception of lead and aluminum), and it has a slight alcohol-like odor. Molecular weight: 32.04; relative density: 0.792 (20/4°C); melting point: -97.8°C; boiling point: 64.5°C; heat of combustion: 725.76 KJ/mol; flash point: 12.22°C; autoignition temperature: 463.89°C; vapor density: 1.11; vapor pressure: 13.33 KPa (100 mmHg at 21.2°C); the explosive limit of its vapor mixture with air is 6–36.5% (by volume). It is miscible with water, ethanol, ether, benzene, toluene, halogenated hydrocarbons, and many other organic solvents, but not miscible with petroleum ether. It burns easily when exposed to heat, open flames, or oxidizing agents. The combustion reaction is as follows: 2CH3OH + 3O2 → 2CO2 + 4H2O. Methanol is an organic substance that, when present in water, can lead to excessive growth of microorganisms and algae, thereby increasing the amount of biocides needed to treat the circulating water. If not controlled properly, it can cause serious problems such as corrosion and scaling in pipes and equipment.
I guess methanol in the water is beneficial for the circulating water as it kills algae. :)
Does anyone upstairs know anything about circulating water? A concentration of just over ten ppm of methanol is completely insufficient to achieve a sterilizing effect; instead, it provides nutrients for microorganisms, leading to their excessive growth and the formation of large amounts of sludge.
Is there any good way to deal with it? ?

The last edit to this post was made by hesonchang214 on 2013-6-10 at 23:24. The solution involves first locating the leak points and sealing them up; thereafter, the water should be replaced. If conditions permit, an oxidizing bactericide can be added, in sufficient quantities, otherwise it will be impossible to control bacteria and algae!
This post was last edited by cdpulin on 2010-8-9 at 13:31. Apart from having some effect on algae, there are no significant impacts. It will not increase corrosion. Note: Check whether the bactericide is compatible with methanol.
Agreed, that’s indeed the case! Seal the leaks first. I have tried various pesticides, with no success!
