Avoid the 3 Tendencies of Bad Bosses

Being a boss is difficult, especially when one has to counteract the natural tendencies that separate them from the people they manage. Understanding what these tendencies are can help to avoid them. Here are the top three to be mindful of: Self-deception. This isn’t a problem unique to bosses; most people overestimate their skills compared to what they actually are. Be aware of the possibility that you might be exaggerating your abilities, and seek feedback and evaluations that can show you your true strengths. Disregard for subordinates. Those in positions of power are closely watched by those beneath them, but this level of attention isn’t returned. Once you become the leader, remember to stay interested in and engaged with your direct reports. Isolation from reality. No one wants to deliver bad news to their boss, so often the boss isn’t aware of the full situation. Create a culture in which those who bring important information forward are praised rather than criticized.
It’s too early to worry about that, but it’s still good to know.
