First, the range of the flow meter is established according to the maximum flow rate and normal flow rate required by the process. Ideally, the maximum flow rate of the flow meter should be such that the normal flow rate falls within the range of 1/2 to 2/3 of that maximum value, as this ensures higher measurement accuracy. After selecting the range of the flow meter, choose the appropriate model based on the pipe diameter specifications provided by the manufacturer. For example, rotary flow meters offer two or so different diameter options for the same flow rate; you can select a diameter that is either the same as or similar to that of your process pipeline, so as to make the flow meter’s diameter as close as possible to that of the process pipeline.
Since the range of rotameters is generally fixed, this poses a problem in selecting the diameter. Even when I choose a size that is twice the normal flow rate, it’s still larger than the process pipeline; if I use twice the maximum flow rate, it will be even larger
The selection of instruments should be coordinated with the process; the size of the process pipelines is determined based on the volume of flow.
