Our facility produces 150,000 tons of methanol per year, using a three-column distillation process. The safety valve of the atmospheric pressure column activated; an accident analysis revealed that fluctuations in the feed to the pre-column, coupled with a failure to make timely adjustments, led to unstable liquid levels in the pressurized column, causing the pressure in the atmospheric pressure column to rise sharply.
In our plant, which uses three-column distillation for the production of 100,000 tons of methanol, the inlet filter of the crude methanol pump often gets clogged during operation; the situation improved after cleaning the paraffin from the crude methanol storage tank. Other accidents occur very rarely.
