Why is a U-shaped flow pattern used for the tray?

Among the flow patterns of trays, there is the U-flow pattern. Why is this pattern used, and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
When the gas volume is high and the liquid volume is low, U-shaped trays are required; when the liquid volume is very small, circular downcomers can be used.
For small distillation columns with a diameter of 0.6–1.8 M, where the liquid flow rate inside the column is very low, below 5–12 cubic meters per hour, the inlet and outlet weirs on the tray are arranged adjacent to each other on the same side; the liquid flows across the tray from the inlet in a U-shaped path to the outlet for overflow. . . . . . . . .
The 2nd floor is correct; the U-shaped flow applies regardless of the tower diameter.
