Even tightening bolts requires considerable expertise – just grabbing a wrench and twisting it hard doesn’t mean you’re the best at it. There are 2 issues you need to consider here: 1. Even if you can actually remove the actuator and such, then when you install a handwheel, do you know how to do that? Should the bracket be removed? If so, what type of balancing fixture should be installed in its place? And once that fixture is in place, will it be completely perpendicular to the valve stem? 2. Once everything on this is completed, you need to know how to adjust the flow rate/pressure/temperature – which screw to turn. If that’s possible, there’s no need to spend a lot of money on an automatic control valve. Control valves are an important component in automatic control systems. During the automatic control process, the control of many continuous production processes ultimately comes down to regulating the flow rate through control valves; in other words, the control valve is the key component that carries out the control commands to complete the control tasks. Therefore, the performance of the control valve is directly related to the success or failure of the entire control system. It is generally very difficult to install hand wheels on valves with a straight stroke; this is only possible for valves that rotate around an axis, such as ball valves and butterfly valves. Since the poster mentioned cylinders, it is more likely that ball valves or butterfly valves are involved. So, by simply removing the actuator, it can be used as a manual valve! Why install a handwheel? It can be adjusted manually using a wrench, but this makes it more labor-intensive for the operator. I think it’s possible. The steam control valves we use now come with handwheels; these handwheels are already installed on the valves at the time of production, not added by us later. There is a clip in the position of the handwheel, and once the handwheel is adjusted to the desired position, automatic regulation stops working, and manual adjustment is required instead. Only when it is set to the automatic mode can automatic regulation take effect. Control valves come with this functionality right from the factory, so I believe that as long as the necessary conditions are met, it’s possible to create a system that allows for switching between manual and automatic control.
Self-regulating valves should fall under the responsibility of the instrumentation department. Even if it’s possible to switch to manual operation, will the process operators be willing to do so in order to ensure production? Or when selecting a self-regulating valve, it is possible to request one equipped with a handwheel, so that it can be adjusted manually in emergency situations
