What is the difference between a flow restriction plate and an orifice plate? What is their respective role?
One can be measured (a 45° bevel is made at the opening), the other cannot, it is just an opening.
The flow-restricting orifice plate can be used as a flow measurement element to measure flow, or as a throttling element to limit flow and reduce pressure. When there is a certain pressure difference before and after the orifice plate, the fluid flows through the orifice plate. For a certain orifice diameter, the flow rate through the orifice plate increases as the pressure difference increases. But when the pressure difference exceeds a certain value (called critical pressure difference), the flow rate of fluid through the shrinkage holes of the orifice plate reaches the speed of sound. At this time, no matter how the pressure difference increases, the flow rate flowing through the orifice plate will remain at a certain value and will no longer increase. The flow-limiting orifice plate is based on this principle to limit the flow of fluid and reduce the pressure. When the pressure difference between the front and rear of the pipeline is large, the method of adding a throttling orifice plate is often used. The principle is: When fluid flows in a pipeline, due to the local resistance of the orifice plate, the pressure of the fluid is reduced and energy is lost. This phenomenon is called throttling in thermodynamics. This method is simpler than using a regulating valve, but it must be selected appropriately. Otherwise, the liquid will easily cause cavitation, which will affect the safe operation of the pipeline.
