Hello everyone: I have a question. For pipes designed for heat retention, their supports can be welded directly to the pipes or fixed to them using clamps. Why, then, do the supports for pipes designed for heat insulation need to be separated using red pine wood? I haven’t been able to figure this out. My own analysis suggests that it might be because, in low temperatures, metals become more brittle and stress concentrations occur, which makes them prone to breaking. That’s why separation is necessary. But if the pipes designed for heat retention are in direct contact with metal supports, wouldn’t heat be lost through the metal?
The main purpose is to prevent cold bridges from occurring, which could lead to heat loss. For insulated pipes, welded pipe supports are generally used in order to save costs; whereas for pipes operating at high temperatures, insulated pipe supports are necessary.

In chemical plants, it’s easy to raise the temperature from 20° to 200°, but it’s much more difficult to lower it from 20° to -50°. Much more energy is required to cool down than to heat up. Therefore, it is necessary to prevent cold bridges on cold pipes. If the temperature of your hot pipeline is very high, insulated pipe supports are also necessary.
