Today at work, I suddenly received a call from my supervisor asking what the hydrogen sulfide level in raw gas was. I realized that we usually don’t conduct hydrogen sulfide analyses; we only do them when sulfiding the conversion catalysts. I had forgotten what the hydrogen sulfide content in gas is. Does anyone know the typical hydrogen sulfide content in raw gas?
It depends on the coal used for generating gas; high-sulfur coal can have a value of 3–5 g/m3, while low-sulfur coal might be around 0.3–0.5 g/m3 – it’s not fixed.
The sulfur content in high-sulfur coal can be as high as 3–5 g/m3. I vaguely remember that the value obtained was somewhere over 20,000 or maybe over 10,000 mg/M3. Is that a high value?
The data from my theoretical calculations relate to low-sulfur coal: when the sulfur content in the coal is 1.21%, the sulfur content in the raw gas is 0.43%; whereas when the sulfur content in the coal is 0.96%, the sulfur content in the raw gas is 0.34%.

The hydrogen sulfide content in the raw gas is related to the sulfur content in the coal used as raw material; the higher the sulfur content in the coal, the higher the sulfur content in the raw gas. The hydrogen sulfide content in the raw gas needs to be measured; otherwise, how can you know whether sulfidation is occurring in the conversion catalyst? How can we determine whether the hydrogen sulfide content meets the minimum requirement for hydrogen sulfide in cobalt-molybdenum catalysts?
It depends on the quality of coal used for burning, the load, as well as the processing methods. When we use lignite, it’s 0.02~0.01
It depends on the type of coal being used, as well as the sulfur content in that coal. It also depends on the gasification process – whether it is fixed-bed gasification, or gasification using Texaco or four-nozzle technologies; all these factors play a role.
If Xiaolongtan lignite is used, the total sulfur content is generally around 1%, which is 10 g/m3
It is also related to the gas generation process. The hydrogen sulfide content in raw gas varies depending on the gas production process and the type of coal used
