While looking at some documents today, I came across the following statement: “Each analogue input, digital input, and digital output channel should have its own fuse (or other appropriate protection) either on the DCS I/O termination card or at the output terminals, in order to prevent a single fault from causing the entire card to stop functioning. This is not necessary if the signal makes use of an IS barrier located near the I/O card.” I’m not quite sure what this means. What is the function of a fuse?

Each channel is equipped with a fuse, serving the same purpose as mentioned on the second floor. When a single circuit board has multiple channels, the fuse for one of those channels provides overcurrent protection, preventing the entire circuit board from failing.
I agree with what was stated above; the core goal is to ensure that the entire circuit board does not fail as a whole due to a malfunction in just one channel. But it was also mentioned that if a safety barrier is used for this channel, then there is no need to install a fuse, especially with isolated safety barriers; such barriers serve to limit the energy in the circuit, preventing dangerous energies resulting from faults such as short circuits or overloads from causing explosions on site, and they also help to protect the components from damage.
