I would like to ask how to design a reactor. I’ve referred to books on chemical reaction engineering, but I’m still confused. Are there any software tools available? Thank you
Reply to 1# zhuruo: The original poster, please be more specific – what kind of reactor is it? Fixed-bed, fluidized-bed, or tubular reactor?
Reply to 2# songtonghui: It’s a gas-phase reaction. We chose a tubular reactor, but we’re not sure if that was the right choice; we didn’t know what to do during the design phase
Take it step by step: first calculate the reactor load based on the production volume, then determine the catalyst volume using the design parameters (such as space velocity), and finally design the volume of the tubular reactor based on the heat exchange conditions.
Gas-gas reactions can be carried out in tubular reactors
When the production requirements are fixed, that is, when the amount of raw materials, their composition, and the desired properties of the product are known, design calculations are used to determine the process dimensions of the reactor, such as its diameter and height. Reactor design involves kinetics, mass balance, heat balance, reaction time, residence time, etc. Specific details need to be checked in the relevant design documents.
Refer to the reactor design section of the chemical engineering design manual. It’s probably some kind of experimental device; it won’t be too complicated.
There are mainly two factors: 1 is concentration, which for gases refers to partial pressure; 2 is temperature, namely at what temperature the reaction takes place and what the heat of reaction is, which then determines whether adiabatic or isothermal conditions should be used, along with the calculation of the heat transfer rate. For gas-gas reactions catalyzed by solid catalysts, apparent kinetic parameters for pilot-scale testing are required
Reactor design is the most challenging aspect of all chemical engineering equipment. If this issue could be resolved by referring to textbooks on chemical reaction engineering, then China’s chemical industry would surely be at the forefront of the world. To address reactor design problems effectively, it is necessary to provide information such as the substances involved in the reaction and the quantities used.
