The temperature of the seal for the chilled water pump, model 113-55, is minus 30 degrees; perfluoroelastomer has been used, but it fails after a short time; I recently used a fluorinated gasket; it was too hard to install when fitting the stationary and rotating rings. After it failed and was removed, the fluorinated gasket became wavy – could this waviness be caused by thermal contraction? I’d like to ask everyone for advice. I want to use a silicone O-ring as a substitute; I’m not sure if anyone knows of any better materials for O-rings that can withstand low temperatures. I’m hoping to get help from everyone to solve this issue~~~~~~~~~~~~
This post was last edited by hendryben on 2010-9-2 at 10:38. Temperature isn’t a difficult issue; it’s necessary to specify the medium and pressure in order to select the appropriate seal. It’s only minus 30 degrees; for ordinary low-temperature sealing, using PTFE-based materials will suffice. It’s better to use reinforced PTFE, which can handle temperatures down to minus 200 degrees. F46 will work too. There is a problem with the rubber.

The medium is cold brine, and the pressure is low. It turned out that O-rings made of fully fluorinated material were used. It uses PTFE, which is too hard and makes installation inconvenient. Recently, it was found that the inner ring of the rotating and stator rings had wave-like defects. Are there any new materials besides silicone?
Saltwater? What salt water? Such a low temperature can’t be saltwater, right? So it’s frozen? The material selection for the medium must be based on clear criteria; it cannot be so vague. When talking about saltwater, it is necessary to clarify its components and what its concentration is. If oxidizing salts are used, the choice of materials can be more selective.
Silicone rubber can be used, as it is resistant to low temperatures. If cost is not a concern, imported rubber rings can be used, offering a significantly longer service life.
Reply to 6#: I appreciate your helpful advice. Thank you; I plan to use silicone rubber. The original all-inclusive fluorine version was inconvenient to install, but it was very durable.
The O-ring creates slight undulations in the groove, thereby improving the lubrication conditions.
