Both processing methods pose environmental pollution problems. The yield of the hydrofluoric acid process is higher than that of the sulfuric acid process, and the problem of acid-dissolved oil that arises during the sulfuric acid process is difficult to handle. That’s all I know
The sulfuric acid-based alkylation technique is relatively mature and operates stably, but it generates large amounts of waste acid, and the transportation and treatment of this waste acid pose a significant problem; The biggest drawback of hydrofluoric acid is its extreme toxicity. It is volatile, and even inhaling small amounts of it can cause severe, irreversible damage to human bones. As a result, the use of hydrofluoric acid in alkylation processes has been largely discontinued, and in the long run it will be phased out, in my opinion.
Alkylation using hydrofluoric acid is indeed subject to certain limitations due to the extreme toxicity and danger of hydrofluoric acid, but appropriate safety measures can completely prevent any operational problems. Currently, since alkylation with hydrofluoric acid does not pose the problem of waste acid regeneration, the number of operating units for alkylation using hydrofluoric acid is much higher than that for the sulfuric acid-based method. For example, the alkylation of hydrofluoric acid at Dalian Petrochemical, Shanghai Gaqiao Petrochemical, Beijing Yanshan Petrochemical, and other facilities is all operating normally. However, sulfate-based alkylation has fewer operating units than hydrofluoric acid-based alkylation due to the issue of waste acid regeneration.
