During the installation of the piston compressors by the construction party at our facility, I noticed that they tried to ensure the levelness of the compressor cylinders by adjusting the foot bolts. Is this approach correct? Will it have an impact on future operations?
It should be correct. Adjusting the equipment foundation means adjusting the piston cylinder body (which is already adjusted during factory assembly); at the installation site, only the foundation needs to be adjusted. Specifically, this involves initial rough alignment, grouting, and precise alignment, depending on the installation standards you follow.
In simple terms, the cylinder body and the intermediate component are pre-assembled; they are determined at the time of production, so no further adjustments are needed
Reply to 1# tjdxz: Adjusting the foundation bolts directly is definitely not correct; however, it is acceptable to adjust both the foundation bolts and the shims together. Otherwise, during operation of the equipment, vibrations can cause the foundation bolts to loosen, leading to uneven settlement of the foundation and a deviation in the levelness of the cylinder from the design specifications. This in turn increases the additional loads during operation, and may even damage the compressor.
I have seen pumps being aligned using shims, then foot bolts are installed, and finally grouting is done

Skid-mounted structure: align it using shims, then install the foot bolts, and finally pour grout
If horizontal alignment is adjusted only using anchor bolts, that is definitely incorrect; however, if shims are used for adjustment and then the anchor bolts are tightened, there is no problem – essentially, the anchor bolts serve only to secure everything in place. It seems the original poster still needs to take a close look at the regulations.
