Hello everyone, I’m a beginner in methanol distillation and would like to ask the more experienced colleagues: what are the common faults that can occur with the pumps used in methanol distillation production, such as the feed pumps and reflux pumps? How did everyone handle it?
The crude methanol feed pump is prone to having its filter screens clogged by paraffin. The atmospheric pressure reflux pump is susceptible to gas entrapment; the pump should be emptied to remove the paraffin, or the cooling water for the pump should be adjusted
I. Insufficient pump flow. Solutions: 1. Clear the suction and discharge pipes; 2. Clean the impeller; 3. Improve the sealing of the pump body.
II. Abnormal noises inside the pump. Solutions: 1. Disassemble and inspect to remove foreign objects; 2. Lower the temperature of the medium; 3. Improve the sealing.
III. Overheating of bearings. Solutions: 1. Adjust the concentricity; 2. Add lubricant; 3. Reduce the speed; 4. Decrease the flow rate; 5. Supply cooling water.
IV. Excessive current. Solutions: 1. Loosen the packing gland; 2. Reduce the flow rate; 3. Replace the bearings.
V. Vibration of the pump body. Solutions: 1. Tighten the foot bolts; 2. Adjust the concentricity; 3. Lower the temperature of the material; 4. Replace the impeller
1. Excessively high bearing temperature: A. Vibration of the bearing housing – Identify the cause and take appropriate action. B. Poor quality of lubricating oil – Change the oil. C. Damaged bearings – Disassemble and inspect; replace if necessary. 2. Loud noise from the bearings: A. Presence of foreign contaminants – Inspect the internal components. B. Worn bearings – Perform repairs. C. Bearings stuck – Address the issue during major repairs. D. Loose connecting parts – Repair them. E. Vibration of the bearing housing – Identify the cause and address it. F. Cavitation – Identify the cause and address it. G. Misalignment of the shaft – Realign it. 3. Excessive vibration of the pump: A. Misalignment – Realign it. B. Unbalanced rotor – Achieve balance during major repairs. C. Large bearing clearance – Perform repairs. D. Loose connecting parts – Repair them. E. Vibration of the bearing housing – Identify the cause and address it. 4. Increased sealing leakage: A. Damaged sealing surfaces – Disassemble and replace if necessary. B. Damaged seal rings – Repair or replace them. C. The specific pressure on the sealed end face is not appropriate. C. Adjust it again during maintenance. D. The sealing installation is incorrect; reinstall it. E. The sealing pressure is not appropriate; adjust it again. P. There are impurities in the sealing or flushing medium. F. Replace the sealing medium and add filtration to the flushing fluid. 1. Vacuum formation in centrifugal pumps: causes and solutions. Symptoms: Large fluctuations in the reading of the outlet pressure gauge, large fluctuations in the ammeter reading, and sometimes sharp noises inside the pump. Reason: (1) The flange connection at the suction inlet is not tight, or the suction inlet pipeline is blocked. ⑵ This is because the gas was not completely removed during pumping, or there is a gaseous phase in the medium. ⑶ The liquid level in the front container, tank, or tower is low, or the suction inlet pressure is low. ⑷ The motor reverses direction. ⑸ The impeller is clogged, loose, or installed in the wrong direction. ⑹ As the temperature drops, the viscosity of the liquid increases. ⑺ The installation clearance of the impeller mouth ring or pump body mouth ring is too large. ⑻ Vacuuming is caused by the installation of packing and mechanical seals, or an excessive amount of sealing fluid. Treatment: (1) Retighten the flange connection bolts of the suction inlet pipe or switch to another pump to remove blockages in the suction inlet pipeline. ⑵ Restart the pump after refilling it to remove all gas. ⑶ Increase the liquid level or inlet pressure in the front container, tank, or tower. ⑷ Switch the pump and contact the electrical workshop to check the motor. ⑸ Switch the pump and contact the maintenance shop to repair the faulty pump. ⑹ Raising the temperature reduces the viscosity of the liquid. ⑺ Switch the pump and contact the maintenance shop to repair the faulty pump. ⑻ Adjust the amount of sealing fluid or switch pumps, and contact the maintenance workshop to repair the faulty pump.
It depends on the pump you use! Not all pumps are the same!

All the pumps used for distillation in our company are shielded pumps made by Dalian Empire; they perform very well. They have been in use for three to four years without ever breaking down, and any problems that arise are due to external factors. For example, if the crude methanol feed pump fails to generate pressure, it’s likely that the inlet filter is clogged, and cleaning the filter resolves the issue. Another issue is that the pump used to transport the alcohol-containing water from the recovery tower is prone to having its inlet filter clog; when flow rate is reduced, simply cleaning the filter will resolve the problem.
What is the normal temperature of the pump body when a canned pump is in operation? For crude methanol pumps and forecast pumps, as well as normal pressure reflux pumps and residue pumps? I also want to ask: what is the minimum amount of fluid required for a canned pump to operate, and how is this determined?
