For the electrical power needs of construction work on a large-scale petrochemical project, multiple box-type transformers are required. Currently, there are mainly European-style and American-style transformers – what are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Given the same capacity, which one is recommended?
Since the late 1970s, China has introduced and replicated box-type substations from countries such as France and Germany; these substations utilize high- and low-voltage switchgear along with transformers in their structure. Such box-type substations are known as European-style box-type substations, and they can be metaphorically described as structures that house the high- and low-voltage switchgear and transformers. Since the 1990s, our country has introduced American box-type substations, in which the load switch, ring main unit switch, and fuses are structurally simplified and placed inside the transformer tank submerged in oil. Oil-immersed zinc oxide arresters are also used as lightning arresters. In this type of box transformer, the oil conservator is removed, and the oil tank as well as the radiator are exposed to the air; it is known as an American-style box transformer, which can be vividly described as a box attached to the side of the transformer.
A box substation (abbreviated as box sub) generally consists of a high-voltage compartment, a transformer compartment, and a low-voltage compartment. Depending on the product structure and the components used, they are divided into two typical styles: European-style box transformers and American-style box transformers.
