Under what circumstances are three supports used for horizontal containers, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of using three supports?
Multiple supports are selected when the length-to-diameter ratio is high.
When the length is relatively large and the length-to-diameter ratio is high, a three-saddle design is used. The biggest drawback of this design is that it requires high levels of precision with regard to the horizontal tolerance of the saddle surfaces as well as minimal settlement of the saddles’ foundations. If these two factors are not properly controlled, it is possible that only two of the saddles will bear the load, which can cause serious damage to the equipment’s structure; therefore, it is generally better to avoid using this design.
