It’s embarrassing to admit, but I’ve had this question for two years: why do most atmospheric storage tanks have a conical design for their tops? I hope fellow sailors can let me know...

Conical tops experience better stress distribution relative to flat surfaces, requiring thinner steel plates; for those with larger diameters, spherical tops are generally used!
Whether to use a conical or arch-shaped top, whether to add reinforcement, and whether to have a smooth surface—all of these need to be determined through calculations.
