Guizhou plans to invest 123 billion yuan to establish three major coal chemical industries; turning this \"black gold\" into \"gold\" will generate annual profits of over 20 billion yuan. Through chemical processing, coal can be turned into methanol and gasoline, and can essentially be transformed into almost all the products we use in our daily lives. It was only after interviewing the Provincial Development and Reform Commission yesterday that the reporter learned how remarkable coal is. “Coal is essentially made up of carbon, and carbon is the most important element in our lives. By combining carbon and hydrogen atoms, or adding a small amount of oxygen atoms, we can obtain the vast majority of industrial raw materials. ”An authoritative expert in coal chemical industry from the Provincial Development and Reform Commission told reporters that the coal chemical industry being developed in Guizhou Province involves, in simple terms, mixing coal powder with water and igniting it in an environment where oxygen is largely excluded. This allows the carbon atoms in the coal to react with the hydrogen and oxygen atoms in the water, thereby producing carbon monoxide and hydrogen – the basic raw materials used to manufacture various industrial derivatives. Then, through a reaction apparatus, by pressurizing and heating carbon monoxide and hydrogen while adding a specific catalyst, methanol, various types of oils (gasoline and diesel with qualities identical to those obtained from crude oil), synthetic ammonia, and more than 100 other chemical raw materials or products can be produced. These products are reprocessed and reproduced to yield a variety of daily necessities, such as a pipe or a piece of clothing. Developing coal chemical industry is an important measure for our province to deepen the coal industry chain; it can not only **increase the added value of coal products, but also play a significant role in environmental protection, according to this expert. He said that our province is the largest coal-producing region south of the Yangtze River. Although the production volume is high, the coal produced here is non-smokeful and high-sulfur, with the sulfur content generally exceeding 2%. If coal is burned directly to generate electricity, the emission of the toxic gas sulfur dioxide poses a difficult problem to address. However, in a coal chemical industry that employs coal gasification, the sulfur dioxide produced after gasification is directly broken down into elemental sulfur and oxygen by treatment devices, which not only solves the problem of sulfur dioxide emissions but also yields sulfur with high industrial value, achieving two goals at once. In accordance with the medium- and long-term plan for the development of coal chemicals in our province formulated by the Provincial Development and Reform Commission, vigorously developing coal chemicals and deepening the coal industry chain will become one of the main areas of investment for industrial development in our province in the future, as well as one of the key economic sectors that serve as a pillar for the province’s economy. According to the plan, by 2020, our province will have completed 14 key coal chemical projects, which will be organized into three major coal chemical bases: Biqing (covering areas such as Bijie, Qianxi, Zhijin, Dafang in the Bijie region, as well as Qingzhen in Guiyang City), Liuxing (encompassing Panxian, Zhongshan, Shuicheng, Liuzhi in Liupanshui City, as well as Pu’an and Xingyi in Qianxinan Prefecture), and Qiannanbei (Zunyi City). The total planned investment is 123.06 billion, and it is estimated that after completion the annual sales revenue will be 71.47 billion yuan, with annual taxes and profits amounting to around 29.02 billion yuan, and annual profits at approximately 21.58 billion yuan.
It’s such a huge project; there should be significant investment in the southwest, especially in Guizhou, which is almost being forgotten.
