Defect assessment based on fracture mechanics has developed rapidly in China as well as internationally. It started with traditional brittle fracture assessment, which uses the stress intensity factor KI as a parameter, followed by elastoplastic fracture assessment that employs COD as a parameter, and then by more precise J-integral-based fracture assessment. Various international failure assessment curves have also seen rapid development, progressing from general-purpose curves to Curve 2 and then to Curve 3, with each iteration improving the accuracy of assessment.
