I have a question: when the design pressure of a container is very low, for example, 0.06 MPa gauge pressure, with an inner diameter of 2800 mm, made of material Q345R and a length of around 17,000 mm, the wall thickness of 6 mm would be sufficient based on calculations considering internal pressure; however, it’s not possible to use such a thin wall thickness in practice. Is the thickness determined based on experience, or is there a formula used for verification, such as to check its stability?
The support method should also be considered; if it is saddle support, calculations are required, and these can be done using the SW6 horizontal container
The value of thickness must take into account not only the internal pressure strength but also requirements related to installation, transportation, and support. It is estimated that the owner’s equipment is horizontal, and a saddle is also required to calculate the stress on the cylinder. If the equipment has a liquid level and the static pressure of the liquid column exceeds 5% of the design pressure, then the static pressure of the liquid column should also be taken into account in the calculated pressure.
It means considering not just the effect of internal pressure
Firstly, I think we should consider whether there is enough corrosion allowance first–carbon steel is prone to corrosion. Secondly, your container must meet the NB/T47003.1 standard, which provides relevant checking formulas; there are also some guidelines based on personal experience regarding the amount of allowance needed. If the required allowance is 6 mm, the actual wall thickness I would choose would likely be over 10 mm. Of course, assuming no other factors are considered, the thicker the better~

It would be advisable to conduct a negative pressure check to assess its stability; When considering internal pressure, whether to take into account the static pressure of the liquid column in the tank depends on the parameters of the equipment in question; this equipment should probably be supported by a skirt

For horizontal installation, a thickness of at least 10 mm is recommended. Our models with a diameter of 2400 mm have a thickness of 10 mm. Of course, it’s necessary to carry out calculations to verify the saddle section as well
