I am a university graduate (postgraduate) who has just finished school; I started working at a large chemical plant. Due to my lack of work experience, as a new employee I was assigned to the most basic level of work, where I had to learn from a mentor. This mentor was not a traditional one – an experienced, highly knowledgeable veteran worker – but rather a university graduate with three or four years of work experience (from a junior college). Since the chemical plant has not yet started operations, the current tasks involve doing various miscellaneous jobs, such as opening valves, starting pumps, and verifying processes. There are now some secondment opportunities available, such as working as a translator or as an office assistant (handling tasks like copying and printing). These jobs are relatively easy and do not require working shifts alongside those in chemical plants. I would appreciate your advice: does secondment help with career prospects and skill development? I am an introverted person who wants to make a significant impact in the chemical industry. In my opinion, the key to success in this field is to do one’s job well, master the relevant techniques, and truly acquire solid skills; secondment tasks are not very conducive to the development of one’s core responsibilities. I suggest you go to an engineering firm or another place where you can focus on technical work. An introverted personality might make it difficult to get along in a corporate environment, and it could be hard to become a leader. In the short term, poor communication and coordination skills as well as an inability to socialize are issues； But in the long run, inward and outward approaches are similar, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. In the long run, opening valves and doing odd jobs is largely a waste of youth. Although whatever one does is part of life’s experiences, some people gain experience by becoming prime ministers, while others do so by remaining farmers their entire lives. Hehe, think about it carefully! I’m a bit introverted; after working in that company for over ten years, I felt I couldn’t continue there, so I changed jobs.

It’s all about taking things one step at a time; I just graduated, and I’m good at working with computers, so it’s useful to do some miscellaneous tasks in the office. (Don’t overthink it – that’s all.) As for whether one will be given another chance to lead in the future, it depends on future performance, as well as opportunities and development. In manufacturing enterprises, engaging in political work and even securing a minor position doesn’t lead to much success.
If you are familiar with chemical production, then leave. I’ve borrowed quite a few already. In terms of the workplace, it’s a place where you’re expected to go and work; it’s generally quite busy and demanding. Go if it is related to your career development. It’s best to do something that is beneficial for your development. In their eyes, it’s all about doing the work; the proportion allocated to assessment isn’t very large.
