Main performance parameters of centrifugal pumps: 1. Flow rate Q (V): The volume of liquid pumped by the pump per unit time, in m3/s (or m3/h, l/s, etc.). Q depends on the pump’s structure, size (impeller diameter and blade width), and speed. The value of Q can be measured using a flow meter installed on the discharge pipe. 2. Head H (pressure head): The effective energy provided by the pump per unit weight of liquid, in meters of liquid column. If a vacuum gauge and a pressure gauge are installed at the pump’s suction and discharge ports respectively, and sections 1-1’ and 2-2’ are used for calculations, then 3. Shaft power and efficiency: Shaft power Na – is the power transmitted to the pump shaft by the prime mover (electric motor or steam turbine, etc.), in kW. Efficiency – the energy loss in the process by which the pump shaft transfers energy to the liquid through the impeller. 4. Rotational speed n: The number of revolutions per minute of the pump’s impeller, i.e., “r.p.m.” – revolutions per minute.
