For a typical distillation column, feeding at the bubble point is a common feeding method; in this case, x = xF. Therefore, the equations for the feed line and the q-line are both x = xF. By combining these with the gas-liquid equilibrium equations, yq can be determined, and with xD, Rmin can be calculated. After determining Rmin, the minimum theoretical number of plates can be calculated using the formula; by combining this with the estimated plate efficiency, the actual number of plates can be determined. Next, the tower diameter is calculated based on the gas velocity in the empty tower, thereby determining the approximate dimensions of the entire tower. This is something that is often used in practical applications in daily life, and it also appears frequently in exams.
I feel that knowing these things isn’t really useful at all; I’m not involved in design work. In critical situations, it’s experience that counts. Theory can only guide practice – it can’t replace it. The more you work, the more you realize that many of those experienced workers don’t even know certain principles, but when problems arise, they’re still able to solve them, haha
