These days, my supervisor gave me a problem requiring the calculation of the heat exchange area; steam flows in the tube side, with an inlet temperature of 130°C and a pressure of 0.2 MPa. Water flows in the shell side; the inlet temperature is 40°C and the outlet temperature is 80°C, with a pressure of 0.2 MPa. The flow rate is 200 kg/h, and the diameter of the heat exchange tubes is 19 mm. What is the heat exchange area? How can it be calculated? I calculated that the flow rate in the shell side is around 0.05 KJ/KG, while that for steam is only 0.004 KJ/KG, right? Is it smaller? . . The heat exchange area is required; the unknown parameters in your conditions are the mass flow rate of steam and the outlet temperature. Therefore, you need to solve a set of equations, and the specific equations can be found in the section on convective heat transfer in the principles of chemical engineering.
