What are the by-products in the production of p-toluenesulfonic acid?

After reacting toluene with mixed acids (sulfuric acid and nitric acid) in a reaction tank, the upper oil phase (containing a small amount of acid and by-products) is filtered to yield a dark brown (black) solid substance. What do you think this black substance is? Is it a byproduct of deep oxidation?
Answer this question by yourself. After on-site inspection. It was found that the impurities were caused by a pipe leak, not by by-products resulting from the reaction itself
