May I ask, how is the operating pressure of a distillation column typically determined? What factors are taken into account during design? What is the relationship between the separation accuracy of the column and pressure, and does a higher pressure lead to better separation results? Thank you

Under normal conditions, when pressure is increased, the relative volatility between components increases slightly, which helps to reduce the reflux ratio. However, when the pressure is low, the diameter of the tower is larger. At the same time, pressure control at the top of the tower must ensure that the condenser there can condense the components present at the top. The lower the tower pressure, the lower the temperature of the condenser. Therefore, tower pressure is the result of several factors combined.
The operating pressure of a distillation tower is primarily determined by the volatility of the materials being separated. According to Raoult’s law, for the same substance at a given temperature, its volatility is inversely proportional to the ambient pressure. To achieve a certain level of distillation efficiency and precision, substances that are less volatile are processed at low pressures or even under negative pressure, so as to avoid overheating. For substances that are highly volatile, higher operating pressures can be used to prevent vapor from flooding the tower, thereby ensuring proper distillation efficiency and precision.
