In our facility, there has been an issue where the coating on the electrodes of the electrolyzers came off; when the system was in operation, the polarization current was applied in the wrong direction, which resulted in the hoses at the cathode outlet turning dark in color. There is certainly an impact on equipment and current efficiency, but it isn’t very significant; at present, the electrolyzers in our facility are operating quite stably. I’m not sure exactly what extent the coating peeling refers to; it might manifest as a decrease in current efficiency. If it’s severe, contact the manufacturer to have the coating reapplied.
It seems to be some kind of oxidized paste coating on the membrane; I’m not quite sure either. What are the consequences of it peeling off? Also, what is the extent of the impact caused by the peeling off of the coating on the cathode mesh?
The peeling of the anode and cathode mesh coatings leads to an increase in cell voltage, while impurities entering the membrane and being absorbed result in low current efficiency

If the coating peels off or corrodes, it should affect the hydrogen evolution and chlorine evolution processes. I have many personal opinions; please feel free to give your feedback·
How much does coating peeling affect the voltage?
The hydrogen and chlorine evolution potentials increase, which affects power consumption and leads to a decline in electrical efficiency; the cell voltage rises significantly. If the coating peels off severely, electrical efficiency will suffer, and power consumption will obviously increase – re-coating is the only solution.
Reply to 1# Xiao L: The ion membrane cathode has no coating. It is only present on the anode; it is a zirconia coating that serves to prevent excessive chlorine from adhering to the membrane, thereby avoiding voltage increases and corrosion of the electrodes. If it falls off, it will have some impact. However, the coating is very uniform. It does not fall off in large quantities when it sheds. So there’s no need to worry too much. If you are truly concerned, you can keep the concentration of the saltwater fed into the system at its upper limit and increase the flow rate of that saltwater. It is best to add acid appropriately.
