The world’s largest coal chemical project, jointly developed by China Shenhua Group and Dow Chemical Company of the United States, was launched recently; the investment for the first phase is estimated to be $10 billion. Reports indicate that this Shenhua-Dow Yulin circular economy coal utilization project will produce around 3.5 million tons of fine chemicals and plastic products per year, with 23 production units being built, including ones capable of producing 3.32 million tons of methanol per year and 1.22 million tons of MTO (methanol-to-olefins) per year. According to officials from the local economic development zone, preparations for this coal chemical project are underway, and the feasibility study report is now in the process of being submitted for approval. The completion of this feasibility study was originally scheduled for last year. Unlike conventional chemical production facilities that use oil and natural gas as raw materials, this project aims to utilize the abundant local coal and rock salt resources, along with advanced manufacturing technologies, to produce basic chemical raw materials which can then be transformed into downstream chemical products. This project will play a positive role in promoting the use of coal as a substitute for oil in the production of olefins, thereby contributing to China’s energy strategy transformation.

I don’t know which company’s technology is used for gasification?
With oil prices soaring today, using coal as a substitute for oil as a raw material is an easy-to-implement approach. The large-scale utilization of other new energy sources currently presents significant technical challenges.
So, attention must always be paid to environmental protection in that area; what will happen if the coal is depleted?
It’s not known what the ultimate outcome will be; if it gets approved, it will become China’s largest coal chemical industry base
The information is timely; I hope more projects that have just started will be collected
