The Double Ninth Festival falls on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month; it is the traditional Double Ninth Festival, also known as the “Elderly Day”. In the I Ching, \"6\" is considered a yin number, while \"9\" is regarded as a yang number. On the ninth day of the ninth month, both the sun and the moon are in their yang states, with two instances of the number 9 occurring together; hence it is called Chongyang, or also Chongjiu. The Double Ninth Festival took shape as early as the Warring States period, and by the Tang Dynasty it was officially established as a folk festival, a tradition that has continued through successive dynasties to the present day. Chongyang Festival is also known as “Treading Autumn.” Just like the “Treading Spring” festival on the third day of the third month, it is a day when entire families gather together; on Chongyang Festival, all relatives go up high mountains to avoid disasters, wear dogwood, and admire chrysanthemums. Since the Wei and Jin dynasties, the atmosphere surrounding the Double Ninth Festival has grown increasingly strong, making it one of the traditional festivals most often celebrated by scholars and poets throughout the ages.
