If bypass backflow is used to regulate flow, then all positive displacement pumps must have a bypass backflow for flow regulation. Centrifugal pumps should also have a bypass return when there are large variations in the operating flow rate; moreover, a bypass return is necessary when the pump is used to transport slurries, to prevent pipe blockage due to too low flow rates.
Besides control valves, there are generally three situations; 1) The temperature of the medium being transported is high; to prevent high-temperature liquid from returning during pump shutdown ; 2) Protect the outlet check valve when the high-pressure pump is started ; 3) When transporting high-viscosity liquids.
In many cases, it is necessary to install a return system for pumps used in certain industries; for example, in the case of cryogenic pumps, return valves and return pipelines are generally required at the outlet of positive displacement pumps to prevent overpressure. If the flow rate required at the downstream end varies greatly, a return pipeline is also needed. In short, there are many such situations. To ensure better operation of the pumps, it is usual to require the installation of return pipelines
