There are many factors that affect the desalination rate. The key considerations include the temperature at which the crude oil is desalinated, the electric field strength (i.e., the voltage of the transformer), the time the crude oil stays in the electric field, the amount of water injected, the oil-water interface level, the intensity of mixing between oil and water (the mixing pressure difference), as well as the choice of appropriate demulsification method. Each of these parameters has a significant impact on the efficiency of electrodesalination. In our facility, we used demulsifiers in the past; the oil-water interface level was kept around 20, and the salt content after desalination was generally 10 mg/L. Now we use ultrasonic demulsification, with the oil-water interface level set at 45, while all other operating conditions remain unchanged. As a result, the salt content after desalination is now 2 mg/L, which is an excellent outcome. You should consider the properties of your crude oil, try different operating parameters and optimize them, so as to ultimately use the operating parameters that are most suitable for your crude oil.
