An important method for increasing PTA production is oxygen-enriched oxidation, but this approach requires high standards in terms of plant operation. Oxygen is a gas that is dangerous to use, and its safe use is actually limited to a very narrow range. We installed an oxygen oxidation reactor for Monsanto in Europe using a loop reactor, which is basically the largest of its kind on Earth. A loop reactor is a reaction device that uses a Venturi injector for mass transfer; the high-speed flow of the liquid reaction substrate creates a negative pressure in the injector’s gas chamber, which draws in the stagnant gas at the top of the reactor and allows all the gas inside the reactor to mix with the reaction mixture, thereby achieving mass transfer without any waste. Secondly, an explosion requires oxygen at a certain proportion and concentration. Therefore, we fill the upper part of the reactor with nitrogen, taking into account the properties of the material, the reaction rate, the reaction limits, as well as the explosion limit of the solvent inside the reactor. This ensures that pure oxygen and nitrogen are present in the reactor in the right proportions to facilitate the reaction; once the oxygen is consumed, more pure oxygen is added to maintain a stable reaction process.
