For the water solubility of methanol, simply adding water is sufficient; keeping the specific gravity of crude methanol between 0.83 and 0.88 makes it easy to control. However, different manufacturers use different methods – some add diluted alcohol water. The things that affect water solubility are mainly some substances that are insoluble in water.
Although the boiling points of some organic impurities in crude methanol are higher than that of methanol itself, they tend to form azeotropes with methanol. The boiling points of these azeotropes can be either lower than that of methanol or relatively close to it; especially in the case of methanol-alkane azeotropes, they are difficult to separate and tend to be carried to the top of the tower. After adding the third component, water, since water and methanol are miscible with each other in any proportion, the boiling point of these impurities can be increased significantly compared to that of methanol, thereby enabling the separation of methanol from these impurities. The amount of extraction water added is 15%–20% of the feed volume, and its specific gravity ranges from 0.81–0.83. Treatment methods: 1. Increase the amount of extraction water. 2. Increase the recovery of fusel oils.
